Why WakaTime

More than a time tracker.

WakaTime measures how software is built, and how much AI is used to build it.

Fully automatic

Open source plugins track your coding activity in the background. No timers, no manual entry, no guesswork — install once and forget it’s there.

AI metrics built in

See AI adoption, time, and cost next to your classic coding stats: which agents you use, how much code they write, and what they cost to run.

Accurate to the line

WakaTime runs in your editor, so each line of code is attributed to AI or human as it’s written — not guessed from commits after the fact.

I use WakaTime to measure and improve my focus. Reading Deep Work by Cal Newport made me realize the importance of deep sustained focus. WakaTime seamlessly helps me achieve this goal, and I strongly recommend it.

Software consultant
WakaTime is the only tool that shows me the ROI on AI. I can see how much code is AI-generated, right down to the file level.

Common Questions

How is WakaTime different from manual time trackers?
There’s nothing to start or stop. WakaTime’s open source editor plugins detect your coding activity automatically and stop counting when you step away, so your stats reflect actual work — accurate to the microsecond.
How does WakaTime detect AI-generated code?
Other tools guess by scanning commits or analyzing code patterns after the fact. WakaTime runs directly on your machine through our desktop app, vscode extension, Claude Code plugin, and other editor plugins — so it knows exactly which code came from AI and which you wrote yourself. That’s how every line is accurately attributed to AI or human.
What data do the plugins collect?
WakaTime plugins only collect meta data about the files open in your editors, but never the contents of your files. For the list of meta data, see this FAQ answer.
